Everything you need to know to make the right decision — no guesswork required.
Always measure your room first
Length × Width = sq ft. The #1 mistake buyers make is guessing room size. A room that looks "small" might be 135 sq ft — which is the 1.5-ton zone. Use a measuring tape before looking at any AC listing.
Add heat load adjustments
Top floor rooms need +15 sq ft added to their base area (heat from terrace slab). West or south-facing rooms need +10 sq ft. Rooms with a computer, server, or kitchen activity need +10 sq ft. So a 110 sq ft top-floor room effectively needs 125 sq ft cooling — that's 1.5-ton territory.
Understand the tonnage overlap zone
110–130 sq ft is the grey zone where both 1-ton and 1.5-ton seem viable. In this range, pick 1-ton if: (a) ground/middle floor, (b) north/east facing, (c) mild climate state (Kerala, Assam, Goa). Pick 1.5-ton if: (a) top floor, (b) west/south facing, (c) Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, or Telangana.
Why wrong tonnage is worse than you think
An undersized AC (1-ton in a 140 sq ft room) runs at 100% capacity non-stop, cannot reach set temperature on peak days, increases compressor wear, and raises electricity bills. An oversized AC (1.5-ton in a 90 sq ft room) short-cycles — compressor turns on/off rapidly, humidity control fails, and electricity usage actually increases by 12–18% vs a correctly-sized unit.
The 5-star vs tonnage tradeoff
A 5-star 1-ton AC always beats a 3-star 1.5-ton AC in a room up to 120 sq ft — in both electricity cost AND comfort. The tonnage decision and star rating decision are independent. First pick the right tonnage, then go as high a star rating as your budget allows.
Upgrading? The 18-month rule
If you're replacing a 3-star 1-ton with a 5-star 1-ton, the bill savings (₹6,000–₹8,000/year in most states) typically recover the upgrade cost in 18–24 months. If you're switching tonnage at the same time, check whether your room actually needs the change — you may be paying for capacity you don't need.
