Why Your '5-Star' Appliance Becomes '4-Star' Without Changing Anything
The BEE Efficiency Ratchet is a deliberate government policy: raise the minimum threshold every 3–4 years to force manufacturers upward, and push inefficient models out of the market.
The AC Efficiency Ratchet — 20-Year Timeline (2007–2026)
BEE introduced mandatory labeling for AC and refrigerators. Basic EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) used. Minimum 5-star threshold: EER 3.30.
Standards tightened. Many 5-star 2010 models became 3-star. Introduction of seasonal ISEER (replacing single-point EER) for ACs.
ACs below EER 3.10 became non-compliant and had to be withdrawn from sale. Inverter AC technology surge as fixed-speed struggled with new thresholds.
Significant jump. Star labels fully switched to ISEER metric. Fixed-speed ACs largely exited the premium market. 5-star ISEER set at ≥ 5.00.
2021 5-star (ISEER 5.00) becomes 4-star equivalent by 2024. Introduction of new split labeling for variable-speed and fixed-speed.
Current mandate. 5-star threshold raised to ISEER ≥ 5.20. Check My Label app made official for consumer verification. Many 2024 "5-star" ACs now 4-star.
