What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Launched in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar is India's largest rooftop solar scheme with a ₹75,021 crore budget. The goal: solar panels on 1 crore homes by 2027, giving each household 300 units/month of free electricity via net metering, plus a central government subsidy of up to ₹78,000 deposited directly to your bank.

It replaced the earlier Rooftop Solar Phase-II scheme and dramatically improved the subsidy amounts, simplified the online registration process, and made vendor selection transparent through the national portal.

Who is Eligible?

Own residential property

Must be the owner of the residential premises where panels are installed. Renters need NOC.

Valid electricity connection

Active electricity meter in the applicant's name at the installation address. No outstanding dues.

Shadow-free roof space

Minimum 10 sq metres of clear, shadow-free roof per kW of planned capacity is required.

No prior solar subsidy

The same household must not have previously claimed a central government rooftop solar subsidy.

2026 Subsidy Slab & Return on Investment Table

Assumptions: ₹8/unit tariff · 4 peak sun hours/day · 25-year panel lifespan · net metering at full unit rate.

What size system should you install?

The right system size depends on your monthly consumption, roof area, and local sun hours. Installing too small means you miss grid export credits. Too large and excess generation is wasted. 4 Mistakes That Get Your Subsidy Rejected

Hiring a non-empanelled vendor

Installing with a vendor NOT on the MNRE portal list is the #1 cause of subsidy rejection. Always verify on pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

Paying 100% upfront

Never pay the full amount before installation is complete. Use a 30-60-10 milestone payment structure and get all receipts.

Skipping net metering

Without net metering, you can't export surplus units to the grid. This is required to achieve zero-bill months.

Wrong bank account on portal

Subsidy DBT fails silently if your Aadhaar is linked to a different bank account. Verify before submitting commissioning documents.
