Common Man Guide

How to Read Your UP Electricity Bill

Your UPPCL bill has a lot of numbers — here is what each one actually means, in plain language.

Where to Find Your Account ID

Top-right corner of your bill

Look for "Account No." or "Consumer No." — it is a 10 or 12-digit number printed in bold.

On your meter

The meter number is printed on a sticker on your electricity meter box. It starts with your DISCOM code.

UPPCL app or website

Log in at uppcl.org or the UPPCL mobile app. Your account ID is shown on the dashboard.

Previous payment receipt

Any past payment receipt (online or offline) will have your 10 or 12-digit consumer number.

10-digit vs 12-digit Account ID

Older UPPCL accounts have a 10-digit number. After the 2022 system upgrade, new accounts get a 12-digit number. Both are valid — use whichever is printed on your latest bill.

Key Terms on Your UP Bill — Explained Simply

Units Consumed (kWh)

How much electricity you used this month. This is the main number for your bill calculation.

Fixed Charge / Demand Charge

A flat monthly fee you pay regardless of usage. Urban consumers pay ₹105/month; rural consumers pay ₹75/month.

Energy Charge

The actual cost of electricity units you consumed, calculated slab by slab.

Electricity Duty (ED)

A 5% government tax added on top of your energy + fixed charges. Goes to the state government.

True-Up / Fuel Surcharge

See the section below for a full explanation in simple language.

Previous Balance

Any unpaid amount from last month. Pay this first to avoid disconnection.

What are True-Up Charges in UP? (Fuel Adjustment)

Simple explanation: Think of True-Up charges like a "fuel adjustment" — similar to how auto-rickshaw fares go up when petrol prices rise. When the cost of generating electricity (coal, gas, fuel) goes up during the year, UPPCL cannot immediately change your bill. So at the end of the year, they calculate the difference and add it as a "True-Up" or "Fuel Surcharge" on your bill.

Why does it appear?

Fuel costs (coal, gas) changed during the year. UPERC approves the adjustment after review.

Is it legal?

Yes. UPERC (UP Electricity Regulatory Commission) officially approves every True-Up order.

Can I dispute it?

You can file a complaint at your DISCOM office or at UPERC if the amount seems incorrect.
