AC Tonnage Selection Guide — 2026

How to Choose the Right AC Tonnage for Your Room

Tonnage is not about cooling faster — it's about cycling correctly. A 2-ton AC in a 120 sq ft bedroom cools fast then shuts off, never removing humidity. A 1-ton in a 200 sq ft hall runs non-stop and never reaches setpoint. Get this wrong and no amount of star rating helps.

Add 0.5 Ton per extra person

A room that regularly has 4+ people needs an upsize. Each person adds ~100W of heat load.

West-facing rooms +0.5 Ton

Afternoon sun through glass adds massive load. Top floors gain 10–15% extra heat from the roof slab.

Heavy electronics +0.5 Ton

Home offices with multiple monitors, gaming PCs, or server equipment need an upsize by 0.5 ton.

The Two Tonnage Mistakes That Kill Your AC

Both are more common than getting it right. Most salespeople push oversized units because higher tonnage = higher margin.

Oversized AC

Symptoms

  • Room cools fast, feels cold but damp
  • AC shuts off every 8–10 minutes
  • Walls feel clammy, mould appears within months
  • Higher electricity bill despite quick cooling

The Engineering Reason

An oversized AC short-cycles — it reaches setpoint temperature before the evaporator coil has enough time to condense moisture from the air. You get a cold, sticky room. This is why humidity control is the true measure of a correctly sized AC.

Real Cost Example

2-Ton AC in a 130 sq ft bedroom: cools in 4 minutes, shuts off. Restarts in 3 minutes. The compressor start surge uses 3× running watts. Bill goes up 18% vs a 1.5-Ton running a full 15-minute cycle.

Fix: If already installed: run in Dry Mode 30 min/day. At purchase: never size up "just to be safe."

Undersized AC

Symptoms

  • AC runs non-stop, room never reaches set temp
  • Compressor is always hot
  • 5–7 year lifespan instead of 12+
  • Electricity bill sky-high from continuous running

The Engineering Reason

An undersized AC runs at 100% capacity continuously trying to reach a setpoint it can never achieve. Inverter compressors are designed to throttle down for efficiency — they cannot go above nameplate capacity. Your COP (coefficient of performance) stays at the worst possible value all the time.

Real Cost Example

1-Ton AC in a 200 sq ft west-facing room: runs at 100% every hour, 14 hrs/day summer. Annual bill: ₹28,000. Same room with 2-Ton: runs at 50–60% capacity, same hours. Annual bill: ₹19,500. Saving: ₹8,500/yr.

Fix: Add portable fan to supplement airflow in extreme heat. At purchase: never size down to save upfront cost.

Tonnage FAQ

The questions Indian buyers ask most before buying the wrong size.

At the upper end — borderline. For a ground floor north-facing room with good insulation, 1.5T works fine. For a west-facing top floor room or in Rajasthan/Gujarat, go 2-ton. Use our interactive table above to see climate-adjusted recommendations.
