The BSEB Tariff Advantage

Why Bihar's High Electricity Tariff Is Your Solar Superpower

Bihar residents pay up to ₹7.75/unit — among the highest residential tariffs in India. Most solar ROI calculators miss this critical insight: the higher your tariff, the faster solar pays back, regardless of sunshine hours.

The BSEB Tariff Math

A 3 kW solar plant generating 150 units/month saves ₹7.75 × 150 = ₹1,162/month at the highest slab — that's ₹13,944/year from the top slab alone. Compare that to Gujarat where the same generation saves just ₹6.95 × 150 = ₹1,042/month.

Gangetic Plains Sunshine — Better Than You Think

Patna receives 5.5 peak sun hours/day and Gaya reaches 5.7 — comparable to Delhi (5.5) and better than Mumbai (5.0). Bihar winters are sunny, and monsoon months are partly offset by spring/autumn peaks.

The Compounding Effect

BSEB tariffs have risen 8% per year on average. Every tariff hike makes your already-installed solar panel more valuable. A solar plant installed today locks in your savings rate for 25 years while BSEB bills keep rising for your neighbours.

Get BSEB Net-Metering Approval

NBPDCL / SBPDCL Approval

Submit your application to your respective DISCOM — NBPDCL (north Bihar: Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur) or SBPDCL (south Bihar: Patna, Gaya, Aurangabad). A field engineer will visit to approve roof feasibility.

03

Select MNRE-Empanelled Vendor

BREDA-Verified Vendor

The portal lists Bihar-approved vendors. Only use empanelled installers — this is mandatory for subsidy eligibility. Check Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA) listings.

04

Installation & BSEB Bidirectional Meter

Net-Meter Installation

After installation, BSEB installs a net-meter (bidirectional). This tracks energy you export to the grid. Monthly excess generation is credited as ₹ adjustments on your BSEB bill.

05

Subsidy Disbursement

Direct Bank Transfer

After BSEB issues the net-metering connection, upload the commissioning certificate on the portal. The subsidy (₹30k–₹78k) is credited directly to your bank account within 30 working days.

FAQ

Bihar Solar FAQ — BSEB-Specific Answers

8 questions every Bihar resident should answer before going solar.

Absolutely yes — and here's why most people get this wrong. Bihar gets 5.2–5.8 peak sun hours/day (comparable to Delhi's 5.5 hrs). But more critically, BSEB charges up to ₹7.75/unit — one of India's highest domestic tariffs. So every unit your solar panel generates saves you ₹7.75 (vs ₹1.85 in Gujarat). A 3 kW plant in Patna typically pays back in 4.2 years and generates ₹10 lakh+ in 25-year savings.
